THE DUCK GYBE
OR HOW TO GYBE LIKE A PRO

Windsurfing is a challenging sport that requires a lot of skill. You have to learn basic tricks and the right techniques before you can be a pro rider.

Spinout provides useful tutorials to familiarise yourself with the language and basics of

The duck gybe

It’s a variation on the gybe where, instead of rotating the sail towards the front of the board, the rider flips it over their head. This stylish manoeuvre isn’t hard to do once you’ve mastered the gybe.

It also opens the doors to freestyle.

Learn to perform a duck gybe in 5 stages:

01

Reach the right speed to tackle the gybe and turn the crosswind on a broad reach before beginning the manoeuvre at the same time as your back hand lets go of the boom. Begin the turn with your front arm tense and pull on your back hand just like a classic gybe.

02
Once you’re well into the turn and just before you move downwind, use your back hand to align the mast with the board’s nose.  At the same time, your front hand will pull the wishbone back as far as possible. Keep your edge grip by leaning on your back foot.

03

Then use the hand holding the back of the wishbone to swivel it over your head in an energetic movement and keep your edge grip. After it’s gone over your head, grab onto the wishbone on the new tack reaching as far forward as possible. The speed of the sail going over your head is key to the manoeuvre

04

Once on the new tack, bring the sail back so it’s above the board. Remove the footstraps to get the board flat again and prepare to change your position.

05

To wrap up the manoeuvre, swap your feet to the other side and bear away from the sail to balance yourself out. Lean back on your heels to re-luff slightly. At the same time, haul in the sail to pick up speed. There’s nothing like practice so get on your board and head out! Make sure you try out this tutorial in the right weather conditions.
